Google AI Overviews are now appearing on roughly 15% of all health-related searches. That number is climbing. And the healthcare practices I talk to are responding in exactly the wrong way.

I've been watching this shift closely for the past several months, and I want to be direct about what I'm seeing: the conventional wisdom circulating in healthcare marketing circles right now is going to hurt practices that follow it.

The advice I keep hearing is some version of "optimize for AI Overviews by making your content more structured and comprehensive." That's not wrong, exactly. But it's missing the more important point — and for healthcare content specifically, the stakes of getting this wrong are higher than in almost any other industry.

What Actually Changed (And What Didn't)

Google AI Overviews pull from sources that Google already trusts. For health content, that means sources with strong E-E-A-T signals: demonstrated clinical expertise, real author credentials, institutional authority, and a track record of accuracy. The AI doesn't discover new sources — it amplifies existing trust signals.

What this means practically: if your practice's content wasn't being cited or ranked well before AI Overviews, adding more headers and FAQ sections isn't going to change that. The structural optimization advice is treating a symptom. The underlying issue is authority.

What has changed is the nature of the traffic that does reach your site. Patients who click through from an AI Overview have already received a summary answer. They're not coming to your page to learn the basics — they're coming because they want depth, nuance, or a specific next step. Generic patient education content that explains what Type 2 diabetes is will get summarized and absorbed by the AI. The patient won't need to visit your page at all.

The Shift in One Sentence

AI Overviews answer the "what." Your content now needs to own the "what does this mean for me" — and that requires a level of specificity that AI cannot generate.

What Most Practices Are Getting Wrong

1. Publishing more generic patient education content

I've seen three practices in the last month announce plans to "scale up" their blog content in response to AI Overviews. Two of them are planning to use AI writing tools to do it faster. This is the exact wrong response.

Generic patient education — "What is hypertension?", "Signs of a UTI", "How to manage diabetes" — is precisely the content that AI Overviews are best at summarizing. Publishing more of it, especially AI-generated versions of it, will not get you cited. It will get you replaced.

The content that gets cited in AI Overviews for health queries is content that demonstrates genuine clinical expertise: specific treatment protocols, nuanced explanations of when a symptom warrants concern versus watchful waiting, honest discussion of treatment tradeoffs. That content requires a real clinician's perspective — or a writer who has spent years working closely with clinicians and understands how to translate that expertise accurately.

2. Ignoring the YMYL stakes

Google has always applied stricter quality standards to "Your Money or Your Life" content — health, legal, and financial information where bad advice can cause real harm. AI Overviews have made this more consequential, not less.

When an AI Overview cites a health claim, it's implicitly endorsing that source as trustworthy. Google knows this. The threshold for what gets cited in health AI Overviews is higher than in most other categories. Practices that publish content without clear author credentials, without citations to clinical evidence, and without HIPAA-aware framing are not going to clear that bar — regardless of how well-structured the content is.

3. Treating AI Overviews as a traffic problem instead of a trust problem

The practices that are going to win in this environment are the ones that understand AI Overviews as a trust signal, not just a traffic mechanism. Being cited in an AI Overview tells a patient: Google considers this source authoritative enough to summarize and surface. That's a credibility signal that compounds over time.

The practices that will lose are the ones optimizing for clicks from AI Overviews while ignoring the underlying question: does our content actually demonstrate the kind of expertise that earns that citation in the first place?

What Healthcare Content Actually Needs to Do Now

I want to be specific here, because vague advice about "quality content" isn't useful. Here's what I'm seeing work for the healthcare clients I write for:

Condition-specific content with clinical nuance

Not "What is PCOS" but "Why PCOS presents differently in women over 35 and what that means for diagnosis." The specificity signals expertise. The nuance is what AI can't generate from training data alone.

Named clinician authorship with verifiable credentials

Every piece of health content should have a named author with a credential that Google can verify. A byline that says "Dr. Sarah Chen, MD, Board-Certified Internal Medicine" is a trust signal. "Staff Writer" is not.

Content that answers the follow-up question

AI Overviews answer the first question. Your content should be built around the question patients ask after they get that first answer. "Okay, but when should I actually call my doctor?" is a question AI handles poorly. It's a question your practice can own.

Local and practice-specific context

AI Overviews cannot tell a patient what your specific practice's approach to a condition is, what your wait times look like, or what makes your care model different. That content is inherently yours. It's also what converts a researching patient into a scheduled appointment.

A Note on AI-Generated Healthcare Content

I'm going to say this plainly because I think it matters: using AI to generate healthcare content in the current environment is a compounding mistake.

It's a mistake because AI-generated health content fails the E-E-A-T test — it has no genuine experience, no clinical expertise, and no accountability for accuracy. It's a mistake because Google's systems are increasingly capable of identifying AI-generated content and applying lower trust signals to it. And it's a mistake because the patients reading your content deserve accurate, human-reviewed information about their health.

The practices that are going to build durable authority in AI search are the ones that invest in content that AI cannot replicate: specific clinical expertise, genuine practitioner voice, and the kind of nuanced, experience-based guidance that only comes from people who have actually treated patients.

Two things I'm tracking closely over the next quarter:

First, how Google handles conflicting health information in AI Overviews. Right now, the system tends to surface consensus positions. But medicine is full of legitimate clinical disagreement — on screening intervals, on treatment thresholds, on the evidence base for common interventions. How AI Overviews navigate that complexity will have significant implications for which healthcare sources get cited.

Second, whether we start seeing AI Overview citations become a meaningful referral source in healthcare analytics. Right now, most practices can't easily distinguish AI Overview traffic from organic search traffic. As that visibility improves, I expect the conversation about healthcare content strategy to shift significantly.
